Read my story of how I learned to put myself first and my journey to empowering other women to prioritize self-care!
I spent most of my life being a people pleaser. Growing up, I didn’t know how to stand up for myself and I spent most of my energy giving people exactly what they wanted. This often left me with little time for myself and I would go through cycles of feeling anxious, frustrated and depressed. Always putting others before myself was taking its toll and something had to change.
Starting graduate school was one of the most stressful times in my life. I moved to a new part of California and felt entirely isolated. I knew this transition would be challenging and therefore, I knew that I had a choice—I could either let the emotions take ahold of me and continue my previous patterns, OR, I could do something different.
For the first time in my life, I chose ME. The silence in my studio apartment was scary at first, but it finally allowed me to listen to my thoughts. I began waking up every day to meditate for 10 minutes and saw incredible results. I learned how to build a healthy mindset and engage in other beneficial activities—journaling, exercising regularly and eating right. The more I started each day with prioritizing myself, the more confident I felt.
Now I’m a licensed mental health therapist living in Los Angeles and I’m the strongest I’ve ever been. I still have days that are difficult and times when self-doubt takes over, but I know how to handle those situations. Throughout my experience, I learned that you have to consciously choose yourself each and every day in order to stay healthy. I still love to give to others, but now I know how to do that in a balanced and sustainable way. I started Espresso Yourself to empower women to prioritize their self-care and help them change their mindset to feeling worthy and confident. Self-care is a lifestyle change and the positive results are endless. You deserve the same love you’ve been giving to others!
